What is Kendo ?
Kendo (Japanese swordmanship) is one of the traditional martial arts of
Japan; it is still widely practiced today.
It was originally developed as one of the fighting arts among samurai
of old. Practice matches with protective gear and shinai(a sword made of
bamboo) were devised in the middle of the Edo period. These became the
models for kendo today.
It is fairly popular, though it is considered to be more of a
discipline for spiritual development than a pastime for enjoyment. Good
manners are important in kendo. For example, players always bow to each
other before and after matches. The levels of competence are shown by
dan, which consist of ten dan; from first dan to tenth dan. This system of
rank encourages progress.
A kendo match consists of three points and the first to score the first
two points is the winner. If only one point has been scored in the alotted
time, that person is the winner. A match usually lasts five minutes.
The player makes a point by hitting the opponent's head(men), trunk(do),
forearm(kote) or by thrusting at his or her throat. It is not considered a
point, however, if the attack was not clearly made or was noy made in a
spirited manner and from a good position. This is to show the importance
of spirit in kendo.
